The President of Southeastern Louisiana University has ultimate control of the institution's fund raising activities. The Vice President for University Advancement, who is appointed by the President and reports directly to the President, is assigned the authority of supervising the University's fund raising programs and serves as the University's chief development officer. Job descriptions for the President and the Vice President for University Advancement, as well as Southeastern's Organizational Chart, are contained in Southeastern's employee handbooks
(Part I, Section E and Part I, Section D). The University President has clearly indicated to the University community that all fund raising must be coordinated through the Development Foundation. The policy memorandum entitled Coordinated Fund Raising with the Development Foundation makes this clear. The vice presidents also communicate this policy frequently to their staff and are responsible for its enforcement.
At Southeastern, there are only two organizational entities with authority to raise funds on behalf of the institution. These are the Southeastern Development Foundation and the Southeastern Athletics Association.
Southeastern Development Foundation
The Vice President for University Advancement serves as the Executive Director of the Southeastern Development Foundation, as specified in the Bylaws of the Southeastern Development Foundation. The Affiliation Agreement between Southeastern and the Southeastern Development Foundation states the purpose of the Foundation, which is to receive, hold, invest and administer property, and to make expenditures to support programs and activities designed to advance, promote, or otherwise benefit the University. The President of Southeastern is an ex-officio member of the Southeastern Development Foundation's Board of Directors and attends all Board meetings.
All gift acknowledgement letters are sent out under the signature of the Vice President for University Advancement. However, the President sends special thank you letters on all gifts $5,000 or higher.
Each year the Development office prepares a strategic plan that outlines the fund raising goals of the institution, establishes tactics to be followed in the accomplishment of the goals, sets measurable objectives, and assigns the responsibilities for the accomplishment of the goals to various members of the Development staff. This document is then forwarded to the Southeastern Development Foundation Board and the University President for review and assessment. This review process provides the institution's chief executive officer with the opportunity to exert ultimate control over the institution's fund raising activities. The strategic plans for 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 are both available for review.
Southeastern Athletics Association
The purposes of the Southeastern Athletics Association is outlined in the Bylaws and Affiliation Agreement between Southeastern and the Southeastern Athletics Association. The Affiliation Agreement was approved by the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System on May 30, 2003. The purposes are:
- To promote, support and encourage interest and participation in all sports,
- To promote and support Southeastern Louisiana University athletic programs, and
- To engage in any lawful activity, none of which is for personal profit, to further the purposes of this organization.
The Association raises funds through membership dues, contributions, and corporate sponsorships. The Executive Director of the Southeastern Athletics Association reports to the Vice President for University Advancement and participates in all meetings and strategic planning discussions related to fund raising. The Vice President for University Advancement attends the meetings of the Association and serves as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors.
