Collecting Basins

Collecting basins are areas in a watershed where the water begins to collect. Water is directed toward collecting basins by gravity, so collecting basins will be located in the lowest ground in a watershed. These basins can be streams, lakes, estuaries, rivers, canals, the ocean and even ditches along the side of a road. Collecting basins are also called drainage basins. Some basins you may be familiar with are the Mississippi River Basin and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin.
