C. MENTORING
(optional 1-5 points)
While the University has recognized
mentoring as an essential component of its teaching mission, it
recognizes that not all faculty will be mentors. Consequently,
the points that are awarded for these activities must be based
on the nature and extent of the activities and agreed upon by
the faculty member and department head.
Mentoring occurs when faculty work with
students inside or outside of their classes in such a way that
they draw upon their advanced discipline‑specific knowledge and
involves a greater commitment than the advising that occurs in
the regular course of teaching. Examples of mentoring activities
include directing students on research projects, helping
students understand various options and opportunities available
in furthering their education, writing letters of
recommendation, etc.
If you believe that you have worked with
students in a mentoring capacity, the nature and extent of these
activities should be addressed in your narrative.
