SAMPLE of Major Field Assessment:
MEd Special Education, January 2008
Major Field Assessment
MED Special Education Mild/Moderate Disabilities and Elementary
Education Report of Results and Use
January 2008
A review of the Major Field Assessment goals, outcomes and
assessment procedures resulted in the following data collected
from the LA Department of Education LATAAP results, PRAXIS scores,
grade transcripts, advising notes, method’s evaluation forms,
student teaching evaluation forms, exit surveys of graduates,
student interviews, portfolios, field placement data, and
professional development data.
Based on collected data, Goal 1, Outcome 1 was successfully met
with over 80% of the students rating their programs as
satisfactory and over 90% of students maintained “good standing”
status in the Master’s degree program for special education.
Likewise, the assessment criteria for Outcome 2, 3, 4, and 5 were
met. Candidates rated their preparation programs as satisfactory
or better, over 80% of graduates passed the comprehensive exam,
over 80% of the graduate students indicated that they were
satisfactorily prepared in specific competencies on the exit
questionnaire.
Based on collected data, the assessment criteria for Goal 2 were
met. Students felt the program fostered an understanding of the
unique needs of individuals with disabilities and their families.
Goal 3 was also met with 100% of the graduate students reporting
that they participated in at least 2 professional organizations or
activities during their degree program.
The faculty in the special education program meets at least once
each month to discuss courses, prerequisites, and program
effectiveness based on collected data. All course objectives have
been aligned to state and national standards and are indicated on
course syllabi. Faculty also had the opportunity to use collected
data in writing CEC spa reports for NCATE accreditation. The
special education program used data collected from the major field
assessment goals and outcomes in the redesign of the MED in
Special Education that was mandated by the Louisiana Department of
Education. The new program began admitting students in the Fall
2007.
