CUTLINE ...
LOOKING AT HISTORY-- June and Clyde Poole of Marrero, originally from
Washington Parish, look for an ancestor's signature on the only known surviving copy of the
constitution of the Republic of West Florida (today's Florida Parishes). The constitution, on loan
from the State Archives, is the centerpiece of a new exhibit, which opened March 13 at
Southeastern Louisiana University's Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies. "The West Florida
Revolution, 1804-1810: Fulfilling Jefferson's Mandate, Furthering a Distinctive Regional
Identity" will be on display June 15 at the center, located in Southeastern's Sims Memorial
Library. The exhibit details an event that has been called "the most understudied resurrection in
American history." Center hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekdays.
