SLU-WASHINGTON PARISH BUS SERVICE TO BEGIN IN FALL
HAMMOND -- Beginning this fall, Southeastern Louisiana University students from
Washington Parish will be able to get to class by bus, thanks to the efforts of state Rep. Jerry
Thomas, the Washington Parish Transit Service, the Department of Natural Resources, and the
university.
That is the message Southeastern President Sally Clausen gave Washington Parish
residents at a recent Alumni Association function hosted by Thomas and his wife, Lou Ann, at
their Franklinton home.
Clausen, who was among the special guests, said two 20-passenger buses will make daily
round trips to Southeastern. Bus fare will be $2.50.
"We are excited to see the results of a whole lot of work come to fruition," said Thomas,
who is a 1974 Southeastern graduate.
The new SLU-Washington Parish bus service will be operated by the Washington Parish
Public Transit Service with buses purchased through Southeastern's Department of Natural
Resources grant. In addition to the bus service, the grant supports distance learning sites in
Washington, Tangipahoa, St. Tammany, Livingston, Jefferson and St. John parishes.
"We appreciate the focus that Dr. Clausen is putting on Washington Parish through the
distance learning outreach," said Thomas. "It will be a great help in opening access to all the
opportunities at Southeastern for our citizens."
"It was exciting to have Dr. Clausen visit us in Washington Parish where so many of our
citizens are Southeastern graduates," Thomas added.
