EXHIBIT OPENING AND SCULPTURE DEDICATION AT SLU AUG 26
HAMMOND -- Robert Warrens, a popular contemporary artist living in Louisiana today,
will present his exhibit, Paintings & Sculpture, at Southeastern Louisiana University, August 26-
September 25 in the Clark Hall Gallery. An opening reception to honor the artist will be held
Wednesday August 26 3 p.m.-6 p.m..
In addition, Warrens sculpture Easel Celebration will be dedicated in a ceremony at 4
p.m. The outdoor sculpture was created for the Louisiana Sculpture Garden at Southeastern
Louisiana University.
Warrens sculpture is the second installment of a three-part series. Artist John
Geldersma s Spirit Poles, which is located in front of Clark Hall, was the first to be erected, and
a sculpture by artist John Scott will complete the series next year.
The Louisiana Sculpture Garden is supported by a grant from the Louisiana State Arts
Council through the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Warrens visited the Southeastern campus in the fall of 1997 and met with students and
faculty to discuss the project. Warrens designed and created a large metal sculpture of figures
and
symbols that represent the visual arts: the artist, the model, easel, paint brushes and palette. The
sculpture is located at the entrance to the department s newly renovated arts space on the east
side of Strawberry Stadium.
This is the first public outdoor sculpture created by Warren, who is known for his two-
dimensional works. Warrens has created murals for the Aquarium of the Americas, Pan
American Life Center and the Virlane Foundation, all located in New Orleans. Warrens, a former
Louisiana State University professor, was honored by the New Orleans Museum of Art with a
major retrospective in 1990.
The public is invited to attend the sculpture dedication and opening reception for the
Warrens exhibit. For more information call Southeastern s Visual Arts department at 549-2193.
