FUNDING CONTINUES FOR SOUTHEASTERN UPWARD BOUND PROGRAMS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University received over $1.2 million from the
Department of Education to continue four federal programs: Upward Bound-Tangipahoa,
Upward Bound-Livingston-St.Helena, Math/Science Upward Bound and Educational Talent
Search.
Known as TRIO, the programs serve high school students who face economic hardship
and will be the first generation in their family to obtain a college degree. Services include
academic enrichment and counseling, career counseling, enrollment and financial aid counseling,
ACT preparation and life skills training.
Southeastern's Upward Bound program serves 130 ninth through twelfth graders from
Livingston, Tangipahoa and St. Helena parishes. The students meet on Saturdays throughout the
school year for academic enrichment and attend a six week residential component during the
summer.
Southeastern's Math/Science Upward Bound is a regional program that serves 60
Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico and Texas high school students. It focuses on
academically promising individuals who have selected math and science as primary areas of
interest in their future college careers. Students in the Math/Science Upward Bound program
participate in an individualized curriculum and are mentored to prepare them for a post-
secondary education in math or science related fields.
The Educational Talent Search program serves 875 sixth through twelfth grade students
from Tangipahoa, Livingston and Washington parishes. Educational Talent Search is designed
to encourage students to complete high school and enroll in a program of post secondary
education. Students participate in free academic tutoring, in-school workshops on a variety of
topics, cultural enrichment opportunities, as well as academic, career, and college enrollment
counseling.
