SLU THEATRE DEPARTMENT HEADS FOR NEW ORLEANS
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University Theatre will present The Long
Goodbye, a one-act play by Tennessee Williams, at the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans
Literary Festival, Friday, March 13, at the Toulouse Theatre in the French Quarter.
The production, scheduled for 4 p.m., will be directed by Southeastern theatre faculty
member Kay M. Files, with sets and lighting design by Steve Schepker and costume design by
Rebecca Boyles, also members of the Southeastern faculty.
The Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival is an annual four-day celebration,
March 12-15, showcasing local and regional scholars, writers, and performing artists. Programs
include panel discussions, theatrical performances, a one-act play competition, public lectures by
noted speakers, literary walking tours, musical performances, and a bookfair. Southeastern co-
hosts the festival's French Quarter Literary Conference, March 11-13, which offers includes
parties, opportunities for networking and the chance, through three days of stimulating classes, to
be inspired about writing.
This is the first time Southeastern Theatre has joined the Festival drama line-up. The
student cast of "The Long Goodbye" includes Jason Buuck of Slidell as Joe, the young writer;
Greg Carpenter of Hammond, as Silva, his friend, and Michelle Lane of Ponchatoula as Myra,
his sister. Other cast members include Robert Stratton, from Baton Rouge and Gary Mendoza,
from Slidell. This is the New Orleans debut for the student actors, all of whom are seniors this
year.
THE LONG GOODBYE -- Add One
The play centers around a young writer who recalls the events leading up to the break up
of his family and home as furniture movers empty his apartment. A memory play, "The Long
Goodbye" is reminiscent of The Glass Menagerie. The writer views scenes involving himself,
his sister and mother playing out in the rapidly emptying rooms.
Tickets for the production are $10 and can be purchased in advance through DMI Travel
Inc., at 504-524-0050 or (800) 479-8222, or tickets may be purchased at the Le Petit Theatre
Festival ticket desk beginning March 11.
