EXPECT HEAVY TRAFFIC FOR SLU COMMENCEMENT SATURDAY
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University police are advising motorists to
expect heavy traffic and route changes on University Ave. during the university's Winter 2001
Commencement ceremonies, scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, December 15, at the University
Center.
Paul Marek, director of University Police, said traffic on University Ave. will be
restricted from 8 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
Westbound traffic on University Ave. will be diverted to SGA Drive (at the University's
main gate on University Ave.), where drivers attending Commencement can park in Lee Hall or
Cefalu Coliseum lots.
Eastbound traffic on University Ave. will be diverted to East Tornado Drive for
Commencement parking. Eastbound drivers not attending Commencement will be routed onto
Ellis Dr.
.Marek advised Southeastern faculty participating in Commencement and
Commencement attendees requiring handicapped parking to approach the University Center from
the west (eastbound on University Ave.), where they can be directed to reserved parking. Faculty
will park on the north side of the University Center, while handicapped parking is reserved in
sections 1, 4 and 7.
Marek advised drivers not attending Commencement to use U.S. 190 or Natalbany Road
(Hwy. 1064) and avoid University Ave.
     E. Renae Conley, president and chief executive officer of Entergy Louisiana and Entergy
Gulf States-Louisiana, will be the keynote speaker at the program, where Southeastern will
confer associate, bachelor's and master's degrees to approximately 1,100 students. The Golden
Grads, Southeastern alumni who received their diplomas 50 years ago or more, will lead the
graduates into the 10 a.m. ceremony at the University Center.
