TAU KAPPA EPSILON'S "PRISONERS FOR CANCER" A SUCCESS
HAMMOND - Members of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Southeastern Louisiana
University recently spent some time behind bars -- voluntarily. It was the least they could do, the
TKE brothers unanimously agreed, for a good cause.
From October 16-18, TKE members manned a homemade "jail cell" in Southeastern's
War Memorial Student Union to raise money for a special eight-year-old boy. Through their
efforts, the fraternity raised $700 for Dylan Davis of Avondale, who has neuroblastoma, a cancer
of the sympathetic nervous system, a nerve network that carries messages from the brain
throughout the body.
TKE has made Dylan the focal point of their philanthropy, "Prisoners for Cancer," a
cause that the fraternity has sponsored since January 2000. During the fund-raiser, as many as 20
TKE's could be found in the union collecting donations and raising awareness of Dylan's
condition.
The fraternity brothers have been inspired by Dylan's captivating spirit and winning
attitude, said TKE member Ross Gares.
A few months ago Gares learned about Dylan through a woman with whom he works.
"She asked me if I could donate any money to him," Gares remembers, "and I told her that I
could do even better than that."
"We want to thank all the Southeastern students for their donations," Gares said. "Dylan
is a very grateful and strong boy. He appreciates everything."
Donations in Dylan's name can be contributed at any Hibernia National Bank.
