SOUTHEASTERN RECEIVES TIPS AWARD
ARLINGTON, VA - Southeastern Louisiana University has won the "TIPS for the
University Student Orientation Award" from Health Communications, Inc., provider of the
Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS) training programs.
Health Communications, Inc., said Southeastern was selected because the university's
applications and campus policies most clearly illustrated its commitment to stopping underage
drinking and the misuse of alcohol.
Southeastern will receive a grant to TIPS train up to 250 students as part of their
comprehensive Freshman Seminar 101, a course designed to provide incoming students with the
skills needed to ensure academic and social success at Southeastern. The TIPS seminar will be
offered as an optional section of the course. However, TIPS is already required for students who
wish to host a social event where alcohol is served or who have violated the university's alcohol
policy.
TIPS for the University is a dynamic skills-training program that gives students the
confidence and strategies needed to intervene with their peers to prevent alcohol-related
tragedies. Unique in its interactive and non-judgmental approach, TIPS involves administrators
and students in the process of effecting change on campus. TIPS for the University has trained
450 universities and colleges since the program's inception in the early 1990's. Nearly one
million people have been certified in its eight programs over the past 18 years.
