SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS FOCUSES ON BRITISH TRADITION
HAMMOND, LA -- Southeastern Louisiana University will host a Summer Institute for
Teachers in the Humanities in July. Twenty-five teachers will be accepted into the program.
Applications are now being accepted and the deadline to apply is April 20.
The Institute will help to increase understanding of important texts of early English
literature and will explore and assess the usefulness of recent critical methods, particularly those
examining history, gender and race. "The goal is to re-view, to re-read these works and see them
in a new way," said Institute director and Southeastern English professor, Dr. Eva Gold. The
institute will utilize such texts as Beowulf, The Wife of Bath's Tale, Shakespeare's sonnets,
Hamlet and Paradise Lost which examine the nature and place of the female.
All Louisiana middle and high school teachers are eligible to apply. "Although this
Institute is beneficial for literature teachers, history, art and social studies teachers may also find
it useful since many of our secondary works are interdisciplinary," said Gold.
Guest speakers will include Dr. Michael Hill of Xavier University, an expert in cultural
constructions of race and gender; Dr. Michele Levy of Xavier, a specialist in comparative
literature and literary theory and Dr. Anna Nardo of LSU, a Milton scholar. The institute is
directed by Gold, a specialist in late medieval and Renaissance literature and Dr. Jana Schulman
of SLU, a specialist in medieval literature.
For an application or more information contact Gold at 504-549-2114.
Southeastern's Summer Institute is funded under grants from the Louisiana Endowment
for the Humanities, the State of Louisiana and Freeport-McMoRan, Inc.
