LOCAL STUDENTS RECEIVE AWARDS AT  STUDENT AFFAIRS
HONORS 
     HAMMOND -- Three students took top honors at the Student Affairs Awards Convocation
held May 1 at Southeastern Louisiana University.
     George Lunkin of Marrero, was named Man of the Year and Bree Weaver of Ponchatoula and
Courtney Payne of Norco each received the Woman of the Year award. 
     Lunkin, a mass communication major, is a dean's list student, an Orientation leader, chairman
of the Dream Team, reporter/historian for Gamma Beta Phi, secretary/historian and song chair for
Theta Chi, lead facilitator and a silver circle member, a member of the Gospel Choir, and student
member on the search committee for the vice-president.
     Weaver, a biology/premed major, is a dean's list student, president of Gamma Sigma Alpha
Honor Society, a member of Rho Lambda and the Thirteen Club.  She is an Orientation Leader,
student ambassador, student representative to the university planning committee for technology, a
member of Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity and Gamma Beta Phi.  She is currently doing parasitology
research. 
     Payne, a nursing student is a dean's list student, chapter and state president of Gamma Beta
Phi Honor Society.  She is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity, secretary/treasurer of the Dream
Team, student representative to the university alcohol committee and a member of the national student
nurses association.  Payne was named to Who's Who in 1996 and 1997.
     Gamma Beta Phi was named Outstanding Student Organization of the Year and Beverly
Marshall, adviser to the Creative Writer's Club was named Outstanding Faculty Advisor. 
     Other individual award winners were:
     Stacey Plaisance and Tara Turley, both of Hammond- Student Publications Leadership
Awards. Plaisance is the editor of The Lion's Roar newspaper and Turley is the editor of LeSouvenir
yearbook.

     Panhellenic Council Highest GPA, Fall 1996- Theta Phi Alpha
     Pan-Hellenic Council Highest GPA, Fall 1996- Alpha Kappa Alpha
     Campus Activities Board Outstanding Member Award - Jennifer Mullen of River Ridge. 
     Student Foundation Scholarship Awards- Matthew Blalock of Jackson, La., Paula Celestine of
Covington, Kay Kearney of Slidell and Victoria Pennison of Folsom.
     Intramural Sports and Recreation Male Championship Award - Theta Xi
     Intramural Sports and Recreation Female Championship Award - Theta Phi Alpha
     Employee of the Year by the Sports and Recreation Department- Joey Michel
     William Hodding Carter Award - David Jenkins of Ponchatoula.
     Vice President's Award for Service, professional- Jim McHodgkins, assistant dean of student
activities.
     Vice President's Award for Service, support staff- Patricia Morris, secretary in the Office of the
Vice President of Student Affairs.
