STUDY ABROAD IS 'INVESTMENT' IN STUDENTS' FUTURES
HAMMOND -- President Sally Clausen has said that she wants to both bring the world
to her students at Southeastern Louisiana University and to send those students out into it.
To help students develop a more global outlook in a world that technology is rapidly
shrinking, Southeastern has staged programs emphasizing cultural diversity such as
"International Week," hosted talks about their countries by international graduate students,
strengthened ties with Central American countries, and brought to campus guest speakers from
Mexico, Haiti and Costa Rica.
Southeastern has also developed a wide variety of study abroad programs, which this
summer includes sites in Europe, Great Britain and the Caribbean, according to Charles A.
Dranguet, coordinator of Southeastern's International Studies Program.
Studying abroad, Dranguet says, "is not a cost -- it's an investment in futures and careers.
Employers love to see foreign study on a student's resume and facility in a second language also
looks really good!"
He said financial aid is available for all Southeastern study abroad programs and that by
combining courses on campus with interim courses abroad, students can earn up to 16 hours of
semester credit between spring and fall 2000 semesters. Students who are interested in summer
study should talk to their financial aid counselor as soon as possible, Dranguet said.
Southeastern's seven study abroad programs include three sponsored by the university
and four offered in partnership with other universities:
Study Tour of France 2000, Paris and Provence, France -- July 3-August 7. The
five-week program, which will be led by Margaret Marshall, head of Southeastern's foreign
languages and literatures department, can earn students up to six hours credit in French grammar,
