SLU SPRING ENROLLMENT UP AGAIN
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Spring 1996 enrollment totals
13,863, another record-breaking figure.
     According to official enrollment figures, compiled after the 14th class day, spring
enrollment is up 3 percent from 13,447 students last spring. The official enrollment profile
indicates that the biggest growth area this spring is in the university's graduate program, which
reached 1,458 students, up 10.2 percent from 1995's 1,318. The increase includes a 47.6 percent
increase in the School of Nursing and a 23 percent increase in the College of Business. The
number of new graduate students increased from 134 last spring to 200, a 49 percent increase.
     In undergraduate enrollment, the College of Education recorded the largest increase in
students, 10.4 percent.
     The university's student retention rate, students who continue to study at Southeastern
and do not transfer once enrolled, increased 3 percent for undergraduates and 9.1 percent for
graduate students. Women continue to outnumber men at Southeastern by 8,528 to 5,335.
     Students figures revealed that East Baton Rouge, with 2,933, continues to be
Southeastern's highest enrollment area, followed by St. Tammany with 2,666. However,
Tangipahoa follows closely with 2,629, showing an 8.1 percent increase in undergraduate
students and a 12.8 percent increase in graduate students. Livingston Parish has 1,438 students,
Jefferson Parish 915 and Washington Parish 595.
