MATH PROFESSOR, SLU ALUMNUS TO ADDRESS GRADUATES
HAMMOND -- John Kenelly, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at
Clemson University, will be the keynote speaker at Southeastern Louisiana University's May 15
commencement program.
The commencement program will begin at 10 a.m. in the University Center on University
Avenue. Southeastern is expected to confer degrees on approximately 800 graduates.
Also at the commencement program, the university will award an honorary degree to
Charles R. Redman, senior vice-president of Hibernia National Bank and chairman of the
Southeastern Development Foundation.
Kenelly, a native of Bogalusa, La., is a 1957 Southeastern graduate and was named the
university's Alumnus of the Year in 1994. He is known nationally for his interest in using
technology to revitalize mathematics instruction. A national leader in educational uses of
technology, he has designed many of today's popular graphing calculators and has written several
college texts.
Kenelly earned a master's degree from the University of Mississippi and a doctoral
degree from the University of Florida. Before joining the Clemson faculty in 1963, he taught for
two years at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and was also professor and department

chair at the University of New Orleans from 1968-69.
Kenelly has extensive background in testing and has gained recognition for his work with
the College Board, a national non-profit educational association serving students, schools and
colleges through programs designed to expand education opportunities. He has also been national
director of the Advanced Placement Program, national president of 40,000-member Mu Alpha
Theta high school mathematics honorary organization, and a trustee of the Mathematical
Association of America.
Kenelly headed the National Science Foundation's Calculus Program and directed two
multi-million dollar NSF grants. He has served on advisory boards for the University of Florida
and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and chaired the LaCEPT National Visiting
Committee for the Louisiana Board of Regents.
Kenelly's most recent book, "Calculus Concepts," won the 1996 Annenberg-sponsored
INPUT Competition's grand prize as the year's most innovative mathematics text.
Kenelly and his wife, Charmaine Voss Kenelly, a 1958 Southeastern graduate and
Covington native, have two children. His brothers, Patrick and Orville, are also Southeastern
graduates.
