SLU HOSTS ANNUAL SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR
HAMMOND -- Winners of the annual Region VIII Social Studies Fair, hosted March 19
by Southeastern Louisiana University, have been announced.
Judges chose winners from among 394 projects submitted by students in grades four
through high school. Grand prize and second place finishers for individual and group projects
were chosen in Division I (grades 4-6), Division II (grades 7-8), and Division III (grades 9-12).
Winners advance to the state Social Studies Fair on April 22 at Louisiana State University.
DIVISION I
INDIVIDUAL: Grand Prize: Brian Lagarbo, St. Peter's School (Covington), "The Ba'ath
Party"; second place: Holden Brown, Lake Harbor Middle School (Mandeville), "Mummy
World."
GROUP: Grand Prize: Nick Guarisco and Zach Jenkins, Cedarwood Middle School
(Mandeville), "Taming the Mississippi: The 1927 Flood"; second place: Alexander Richard and
William Herrington, Cedarwood Middle School (Mandeville), "U-Boat Find in Gulf Corrects
History."
DIVISION II
INDIVIDUAL: Grand Prize: Roger DeSanti, Fontainebleau Junior High, "How
Geography Affects Building Construction"; second place: Sam Mathius, St. Margaret Mary
School (Slidell), "Croation Immigration."
GROUP: Grand Prize: Ken Bourg and Jared Stubbs, Thomas Jr. High (Franklinton),
"Ancient Rome"; second place: Brittany Harlan and Mari Alexander, Christ Episcopal School
(Covington), "Save Our State - We're Washington Away."
DIVISION III
INDIVIDUAL: Grand Prize: Kelly Williams, Hammond High School, "Eat Mor
Vejtabilz"; Maria Town, Hammond High School, "Stock Manipulation."
. GROUP Grand Prize: Michael Henderson and Warren Helminiak, Albany High
School, "Medieval Weapons"; second place -- Michael Sciortino and Grayson Terral, St. Paul
School (Covington), "Child Abuse: It Hurts."
