SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA WRITING PROJECT PLANS SUMMER INSTITUTE
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project (SLWP) at Southeastern
Louisiana University is accepting applications for its 11th Invitational Summer Institute on
Teaching Writing, June 12-July 12.
The institute, which will meet from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays, is designed
for outstanding faculty in all disciplines, kindergarten through college, who use writing in their
classroom, said SLWP Director Richard Louth of the Southeastern English Department.
Louth said 15 teacher will be invited to study the teaching of writing and share their own
best teaching practices. Participants also are given the opportunity to work on personal and
professional writing and to develop workshops on teaching writing suitable for delivery as in-
services to local schools.
A special feature of this summer's institute will be a "Writing Marathon" in New Orleans,
Louth said.
Participants become "summer fellows" at the university and receive tuition exemption, a
$350 stipend, books and materials and six hours of graduate credit in English and education.
Applicants should submit a resume; a brief description of a writing activity used in their
classroom; a letter of nomination from a supervisor or from a member of SLWP, and a page
containing name, address, phone, email and Social Security number as well as school and grade
level where the applicant currently teaches.
Applications will be considered until the institute is filled. On-campus interviews will
begin in March.
