SOUTHEASTERN STUDENTS TAKE SECOND PLACE AT SIFE EXPOSITION
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)
took second runner up honors in the Sales & Marketing Group League at the SIFE International
Exposition in Kansas City, Mo., in May.
Representing Southeastern were Julie Renee Andries (English major, Covington), Julie
Adel Babin (management, Gonzales), Shannon Beverly (management, Robert), Roshanda
Johnson (management, Independence, treasurer elect), Holly M. Knieper (communication
education, Metairie, vice president elect), Glenn Michael Rhodes (marketing, Thibodaux,
president elect), Romalise "Mel" Robertson (general business economics, Pine Grove), Jeremy
Villere (accounting, Mandeville), and Stephanie Wascom (marketing, Covington, outgoing SIFE
president).
Southeastern's SIFE team won the championship in April at the regional competition in
New Orleans. They then advanced to the International Exposition, where they also won first
place in a special competition category called "Success 2000." The Success 2000 award was
based on Southeastern's numerous SIFE projects on literacy awareness and the damaging effects
of illiteracy. In another project Southeastern's team raised funds for the Lallie Kemp Foundation,
the private fundraising arm for Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center in Independence.
In October 1998 Southeastern's SIFE program was cited as one of 15 national finalists for
the team's project on Make A Difference Day (October 24). SIFE students taught disadvantaged
children how to use Internet search engines on the computers at Southeastern's Covington
Center. The award got Southeastern mentioned in news media across the United States.
Counting the $750 for the runner-up status in the International Exposition, for this
academic year the SIFE team has won $4,700 for the Southeastern Development Foundation.
