DISTRICT EIGHT SCIENCE FAIR RESULTS
HAMMOND -- Claude D'Antonio of Bowling Green School in Franklinton was the first
place winner of the 1998 Region 8 Science Fair held at Southeastern Louisiana University March
20. D'Antonio, the son of Claude and Melanie D'Antonio, also won top honors at the 1995 and
1997 regional fairs.
For his winning project titled "A Comparison of Antioxidants Effectiveness on Damage
in Insects Caused by Radiation Induced Free Radicals versus Ferrous Ion Induced Free Radicals"
D'Antonio received a $500 cash prize and, along with first, second and third place regional
winners, will advance to the state science fair at Louisiana State University.
Second place honors went to Ian Burbage of The Saint Paul School in Covington for his
projection, "Distractions." His St. Paul's classmate, Joseph Faust, took third place with a project
titled "The Real Event Horizon."
Jackie Golden of Covington, a tenth grade biology teacher at The Saint Paul School, was
named the Outstanding Secondary Science Teacher. Golden received her bachelor's and master's
degrees from Southeastern.
