SLU'S ROCK 'N ROAR A ROARING SUCCESS
HAMMOND -- "Outstanding success" was the verdict on the Saturday, March 8 "Rock
'n Roar Fest" at Southeastern Louisiana University, which entertained some 3,000 southeast
Louisiana high school students on hand for the District Literary Rally and at least as many
Southeastern faculty, staff, student, alumni and community friends.
"It was a wonderful day," said Rock 'n Roar chairman Guy Recotta of Hammond, "an
outstanding success. The faculty who manned educational displays say they want to have even
more elaborate displays next year and the Literary Rally students seemed really happy to see all
these events happening."
"I was really pleased to see so many students, parents and siblings," said physics
professor Mani Manivannan, who helped man the chemistry and physics' departments popular
booth which offered a variety of hands-on science experiments. "Everyone got a first hand
experience of what science is all about. They really enjoyed it."
A Literary Rally veteran, Pine High School teacher Kathy Milner, also gave the event her
endorsement. "The kids enjoyed it," she said, "and it was a wonderful way to promote
Southeastern." "There was a lot more to do," agreed students from Varnado High. "It was more
interesting and the band -- "Dominoes" -- was great!"
During the Rock 'n Roar activities, Lane Director, a senior management major from
Metairie, won the Southeastern Student Foundation's "Big Switch" drawing. Director will trade
places on March 17 with President Sally Clausen in this annual event to raise funds for
scholarships. Mrs. Gail Patout of Hammond won the Daily Star Heart Healthy Cooking Contest
with her recipe for "Chicken Saute a la Patout." (Judging the contest, laughed Dr. Clausen, "was
the toughest job I've had since I've been here!") The North Oaks Medical Center and School of
Nursing Health Fair attracted more than 150 participants.
Director of Alumni Relations Kathy Pittman thanked the faculty, staff, students and
community volunteers who helped make Rock 'n Roar a success.
