SLU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SPONSORS "ROCK 'N ROAR" FEST
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association will showcase
Southeastern's fine academics and fun atmosphere at "Rock 'n Roar: the 'Mane' Event," a day-long
festival for visiting high school students and the community at large. Rock 'n Roar is scheduled for 8
a.m.-3 p.m., March 8, on the SLU campus.
"This is panning out to be an outstanding festival, a day long event with something for
everyone," said Guy Recotta of Hammond, who is chairing the Rock 'n Roar planning.
Rock 'n Roar fun for the whole family includes food and music, antique, flower and art shows,
a health fair and a cooking contest, a Harley Davidson motorcycle display, children's activities, a girls
high school softball tournament; a baseball camp, and educational displays by SLU departments.
"March 8," said Alumni Director Kathy Pittman, "is the day of the District Literary Rally,"
when 3,000 high school students come to campus to compete in dozens of academic areas "We want to
put Southeastern 'on display' for the Literary Rally students, their parents and teachers," Pittman said.
"We want to show them that Southeastern not only has quality academic programs, but that it is also a
fun place to be."
But, Rock 'n Roar, she stressed, is for the public to enjoy, too.
"We want everyone from campus and the community to come and have a good time," she

said. "One of the great things about Southeastern is how the campus and community work together to
provide a wonderful atmosphere for students."
Community and campus contributors to Rock 'n Roar include an antique show by Ponchatoula
Antique City merchants; a cooking contest sponsored by the Hammond Daily Star and SLU's family
and consumer sciences area; a health fair organized by the School of Nursing and North Oaks Medical
Center; a flower show coordinated by SLU horticulture professor Sid Guedry with area garden clubs,
and art show and camp for children organized with the Hammond Cultural Foundation by Don
Marshall, director of SLU's Clark Hall Gallery; and a dance camp by area dance academies.
Pittman said academic departments will set up displays and demonstrations and that the high
school students should enjoy a collection of Harley Davidson motorcycles, which will be set up in D
Vickers field.
Planning is also underway for food booths, bands and children's workshops and games.
