SLU'S ROCK 'N ROAR VI OFFERS FUN FOR ALL ON MARCH 23
HAMMOND -- Plans for Rock 'n Roar, Southeastern Louisiana University's annual
festival showcasing the university's fine academics and fun atmosphere, are rocking right along.
Rock 'n Roar VI is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 23, and includes a
multitude of entertainment and activities headquartered around the War Memorial Student
Union.
First created by the Alumni Association in 1997, Rock 'n Roar VI will entertain teens
from 68 area schools in Bogalusa and Tangipahoa, Livingston, St. Helena, Washington, St.
Tammany, St. John the Baptist, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Iberville and
St. Charles Parishes. The students are coming to campus for the Southeast Louisiana District
Literary Rally, where they will compete in 45 different subjects.
Rock 'n Roar fun is not just for the high school visitors, however. The day-long event is
also Southeastern's way of rolling out a welcoming carpet to the community for a day of family
fun, said Alumni Director Kathy Pittman.
Alumni Association graduate assistant Pat Williams, who is coordinating Rock 'n Roar
VI, said she is following the festival's proven recipe for success -- and adding a new ingredient of
two.
"We're having a barbequed ribs cook-off instead of our traditional cooking contest,"
Williams said. "Men may consider themselves kings of the barbeque grill," she added, "but this
contest will be open to all those great lady grillers out there, too!" The ribs cook-off is sponsored
by the Hammond Daily Star.
"We would also like to have more fun activities for our littlest members of the
community -- contests such as a baby crawl or stroller races," Williams said.

putting contests, and choose refreshments from a wide variety of food booths sponsored by
student organizations and alumni chapters.
They can also visit the Department of Nursing's health fair, co-sponsored by North Oaks
Health System, where they can be screened for blood pressure, glucose, body fat and height and
weight or take a spin on a tricycle while wearing special goggles that simulate the adverse affects
of too much alcohol. They can buy plants, arts and crafts and enjoy music and entertainment
provided by the band "Bass-O-Matic and local dance studios.
