SLU'S ROCK 'N ROAR OFFERS CHALLENGE TO GREAT GRILLERS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Rock 'n Roar Fest is pitting great
grillers against each other in the annual festival's first barbeque ribs cooking contest.
The contest is open to anyone over 21 years of age and will award $200 to the best ribs
cook, said Alumni Association graduate assistant Pat Williams, who is coordinating Rock 'n
Roar VI.
     The day-long event, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 23, rolls out a
welcoming carpet for high school students from 68 schools in a dozen area parishes who are
attending the District Literary Rally. It also unites town and gown by providing a day of family
fun, including music, games, children's camps, academic displays, food booths, and a health fair.
To enter the ribs cooking contest, which is being sponsored by the Hammond Daily Star,
Williams said grillers must bring their own gas or charcoal grill, ingredients and utensils and
prepare two slabs of ribs for judging at noon. Contestants should also bring a platter to serve
their
ribs to the judges, she said.
The contest will take place in the War Memorial Student Union Park. Deadline to register
is 2 p.m., Friday, March 22.
When the fragrance of grilling ribs wets the appetite, the Rock 'n Roar fest crowd will
have plenty to choose from at food booths manned by student organizations and alumni chapters,
Williams said. Booths will offer jambalaya, crawfish pies, nachos, curly fries, onion mums,
pickles, hamburgers, chilli fritos, hot dogs, and strawberry shortcake.
While the Literary Rally visitors enjoy academic displays manned by Southeastern
departments, area children can participate in Rock 'n Roar's camps. Parents can pick up
applications for camps at the Alumni Center, 500 West University Ave., or register online at

Camps include a dance camp for children ages five to 12, conducted by the Lionettes and
Lionette Alumni, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building; and
art,
baseball and softball camps from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The art camp, also for ages give to 12, is
scheduled for Clark Hall, while the baseball and softball camps, for ages six to 13, will take place
at Alumni Field and Strawberry Stadium, respectively.
Camp fees are $5 for the art, softball and baseball camps and $15 for the dance camp.
Also for the young visitors, Global Wildlife will display a parrot and baby antelope and
Big Bird, Bumble Bee and a clown will be on hand. The University Police will also offer the
Kidcare I.D. program.
Motorcycle riders Tony Durio of Southeastern's Physical Plant and Milas Love of Adult,
Commuter and Veteran Services are inviting fellow riders to join them at Rock 'n Roar. Durio
said riders will gather between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. in front of Sims Memorial Library and make
a grand entrance into campus, parading around Friendship Circle and ending up in the McKneely
Hall parking lot.
Tentative plans call for small groups of riders to take a spin around campus every hour
while others display their bikes for the Rock 'n Roar guests.
Motorcyclists interested participating contact Durio at 985-549-3333 or adurio@selu.edu
and Love at 985-549-2213 at mlove@selu.edu.
