 SLU WILL BE "DOWNLINK" FOR NATIONAL EDUCATION ADDRESS
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will host a live satellite "downlink"
of U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley's annual "State of American Education" speech at
11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18 in the Cate Teacher Education Center Kiva.
     The university is one of ten sites throughout the country invited by Secretary Riley to
host a live broadcast of the speech. Sally H. Cain, Secretary Riley's Regional Representative, will
join President Sally Clausen and area educators for the broadcast and a public forum following
the speech to discuss  positive solutions to educational challenges.
     Riley's speech is expected to highlight major trends in education and initiatives to
improve national educational opportunities. The Secretary will deliver the speech from Atlanta,
Ga.
     "Area superintendents, business leaders, faculty and students will be on hand to respond
to the Secretary's remarks. I will meet with Secretary Riley to convey the SLU reaction and
suggestions," said Cain. "The Secretary wants to hear from those who are in the trenches and he
wants unfiltered responses so he can stay in touch."
