SOUTHEASTERN RESTRUCTURES ACADEMIC AREAS, NAMES NEW
ADMINISTRATORS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's School of Nursing has become a
college, two of the university's colleges have new names, and a number of departments have
undergone change as a result of an academic restructuring recently approved by the Board of
Regents.
As of July 1, the School of Nursing, first organized in 1964, became the College of
Nursing and Health Studies, acquiring the College of Education's Kinesiology and Health
Studies Department and its communication sciences and disorders programs. The College of
Business has been renamed the College of Business and Technology, while the College of
Education will now be called the College of Education and Human Development.
Provost Randy Moffett said the restructuring plan was developed with an eye toward
strengthening partnerships and academic experiences. He said the restructuring will capitalize on
opportunities relating to technology, workforce development, and collaborations within and
outside the university. It also will create opportunities for additional success in teacher education,
and focus the College of Arts and Sciences more closely on core liberal arts and sciences, he
said.
Moffett said the College of Business's name change reflects the move of two former
College of Arts and Sciences departments, Computer Science and Industrial Technology.
The reorganization gives the College of Education a new department, "Educational
Leadership, Technology and Foundations." It also combines the College of Arts and Sciences'
social work program with counseling, family studies and leadership curricula in a department
now titled "Human Development." The Teacher Education and Special Education Departments

have been combined and renamed "Teaching and Learning." The name of the College of
Education's Office of Field Experience, which oversees student teaching, has been changed to
the Office of Performance and Assessment.
In the College of Arts and Sciences, the dance program, traditionally part of the
Kinesiology and Health Studies Department, has joined the theater and music programs in the
newly titled Department of Music and Dramatic Arts. The Department of Communication and
Theatre has been renamed the Department of Communication.
Moffett said the restructuring was developed after many months of discussion with
faculty, departments and deans.
"The restructuring increases the number of departments in what was the School of
Nursing from two to four, and in the College of Business from four to six," Moffett said. "It
reduces the number of departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. I believe the
redistribution of faculty members and degree programs from one college to another results in a
better balance among the colleges."
The College of Education and Human Development's newly named departments also
have new administrators, as do several departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Brian S. Canfield, who will head the Department of Human Development, joined the
Southeastern faculty in May. He has been a member of the Educational Leadership and
Counseling Department at the University of Louisiana-Monroe since 1989 and also taught at
Louisiana State University-Shreveport and Texas A&M University. He received his doctoral
degree from Texas A&M and master's and bachelor's degrees from Louisiana Tech University.
E. Harold Blackwell will join the faculty in August as head of the Department of
Kinesiology and Health Studies. Blackwell comes to Southeastern from Lamar University.
Previously, he was on the faculty of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. He received his
doctoral degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, master's degree from Memphis
State University and bachelor's degree from Delta State University.
Alvin G. Burnstein will head the Psychology Department beginning in August. A
psychology professor at the University of Tennessee, he is a graduate of the University of

Chicago. He also taught at the University of Texas Health Science Center, the University of
Illinois and the University of Michigan.
Karen Fontenot, who has been a member of the Communication and Theatre Department
faculty since 1985 became head of the Communication Department on July 1. The Louisiana
State University graduate has been serving as interim head.
Education professors Edith Slaton and John E. Trowbridge have been named interim
heads of the departments of Leadership, Technology and Foundations and Teaching and
Learning, respectively. Paula S. Currie will become interim head of the Department of
Communication Sciences and Disorders in August, when Rakesh Duggall will become interim
head of the Department of Marketing and Finance.
