LA. BOARD OF REGENTS FOR HIGHER ED TO MEET AT SLU THIS WEEK
HAMMOND -- The Louisiana Board of Regents, the state's top policy-making board for
higher education, will hold its monthly business meeting this week on the campus of
Southeastern Louisiana University.
"This will be the first time the Board of Regents will meet at Southeastern," said SLU
President Sally Clausen. "It is a historic moment for the university and will offer us a wonderful
opportunity to showcase our quality and to discuss our needs with these decision makers."
The board's finance, academic affairs, planning and research, legislation and executive
committees will meet Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. at the Cate Teacher Education Center. The
full board will meet Thursday beginning at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend all meetings.
University officials have planned several events to give board members a chance to
experience Southeastern's campus life and activities. That includes viewing an interactive
satellite-based course being taught simultaneously at numerous off-campus sites and the
opportunity to attend a few Fanfare events.
Tuesday night, early arrivers will attend a Fanfare lecture by Robert Mann entitled
"Southern Presidents and Civil Rights." Mann is press secretary to U.S. Senator John Breaux.
Wednesday, board members and staffers will attend a special dinner with Southeastern's
Presidential Advisory Committee and Fanfare Advisory Committee members. After dinner, they
will attend a performance by The Capitol Steps, a nationally-acclaimed comedy troupe of former
Congressional staffers who travel around the country satirizing Congress and Washington
insiders.
"We feel certain that the Regents will leave with a greater appreciation for this institution
of higher learning," Clausen said. "Our community leaders and students are anxious to send a
message regarding the importance of what we do. We will tell the Southeasten story during their
two-day visit but I really feel that our quality and excellence speak for itself."
