SLU TO PRESENT HONORARY DEGREE TO BATON ROUGE BANKER
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will award an honorary Doctor of
Humanities degree to Baton Rouge banker and civic leader Charles B. Redman at the university's
May 15 commencement exercises.
Redman, senior vice president of Hibernia National Bank, is chairman of the university's
fund-raising arm, the Southeastern Development Foundation. He has helped guide Southeastern's
first major fund-raising campaign, "Commitment to Excellence," which already has obtained
more than $6 million in gifts and pledges.
"Mr. Redman has been described by his associates as 'one of Louisiana's truly great civic
leaders'," Southeastern President Sally Clausen said. "Through the years, he has given
unselfishly of his time, talents and financial resources to help our region and Southeastern. It is a
pleasure to honor such a worthy individual."
In addition to guiding the "Commitment to Excellence" campaign and personally raising
more than $700,000, Redman was instrumental in securing for Southeastern a $600,000 gift from
the Schlieder Foundation to establish the Edward G. Schlieder Chair in Environmental Studies,
the university's first endowed chair. He also helped obtain a $60,000 gift from Hibernia for the
Hibernia Endowed Professorship and has been a long-time supporter of Fanfare, the university's
annual October arts festival.
Redman serves as a member of the board of directors of University Facilities Inc., a non-
profit corporation created to help the university build Southeastern Oaks, a $7 million housing
project accommodating 312 students in modern apartments.

organizations. As trustee of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Foundation and chairman of its
investment committee, he managed the church's $1.5 billion endowment. He served as president
of the Boy Scouts of America, Istrouma Area Council, and was awarded the council's
Distinguished Citizens and Silver Beaver awards and the BSA Southern Region's Silver
Antelope Award.
As a long-time member of the United Way of Greater Baton Rouge Metropolitan district,
Redman served as chairman of the board and was campaign chair for two years. He also has
served as chair of the board of the Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting, the Greater Baton
Rouge Food Bank, and the local chapters of the Salvation Army. He was a two-term chairman of
the Woman's Hospital Board.
A retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel with more than 26 years of active duty, including
service in Korea and Vietnam, Redman received the Silver Star and two Legion of Merit awards.
Southeastern's commencement program will begin at 10 a.m. at the University Center on
University Ave. In addition to conferring degrees on more than 700 graduates, the university also
will honor Hammond banker Phil Livingston with its "Golden Ambassador Award," which
honors outstanding service, achievement and/or humanitarian efforts. Livingston is chairman of
the "Commitment to Excellence" campaign and a long-time supporter of the university.
