SLU RESIDENT ASSISTANT PROGRAM TOP IN STATE
HAMMOND -- "Have a Heart," an educational program and fund-raiser for the
American Heart Association conducted in Southeastern Louisiana University residence halls,
won the Program of the Year Award at the Louisiana Association of Housing Officers' recent
state conference for residence hall assistants.
The program was a collaboration between Southeastern resident assistants (RAs) and the
School of Nursing. Through the program, RAs not only helped raise money for the American
Heart Association, but also learned about heart disease and met heart transplant survivors, said
Steve Leon, assistant dean of residential life and judicial affairs.
From February 7-March 7, RAs raised almost $900 for the American Heart Association's
Tangipahoa Parish chapter and School of Nursing professor Ann Carruth conducted educational
programs in Southeastern residence halls.
Also at the state conference, which was attended by 20 Southeastern resident assistants,
Edward Thomas of Baton Rouge, an assistant in Holloway-Smith Hall, received the Male
Resident Assistant of Year Award. Kristy Menendez of Covington, Carter-Harris Hall, received
the Female Rising Star of the Year Award, and Gabe Hood of Mandeville, Taylor Hall, received
the Male Rising Star of the Year Award.
Southeastern also again won the "Spirit Award," which is given to the university that
shows the most spirit and enthusiasm during the two day conference.
