GROUND BROKEN FOR NEW SLU HOUSING FACILITY
HAMMOND A $6.7 million, 312-bed apartment complex under construction at
Southeastern Louisiana University is the first Louisiana university housing facility to be financed
through a non-profit corporation.
Construction began recently with a July 27 groundbreaking ceremony at the 11-acre site
behind the SLU University Center on the northern edge of Southeastern's campus.
University Facilities, Inc., a non-profit corporation formed by Southeastern alumni and
friends, is leasing the site from Southeastern and financing construction of the housing facility
through a non-taxable bond issue. The university will lease the facility from the corporation and
rent the two and four bedroom units to students. When the facility's debt is paid, the corporation
will transfer ownership to Southeastern.
     The 72 four-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom fully-furnished apartments should be ready
for occupancy in spring 1999. Amenities include private bedrooms, full kitchens, gate entry, and
a laundry and commons building.
The housing facility was developed by Capstone Development Company of Birmingham,
Ala., and will be built by Universal Constuctors of McMinnville, Tenn.
