SOUTHEASTERN STUDENTS MAKE GOOD SHOWING AT THEIR FIRST MODEL
U.N. PROGRAM
HAMMOND Southeastern Louisiana University political science professor Kurt
Corbello and the members of his new International Political Simulations class made a
"spectacular" showing at the Model United Nations of the Far West, America's largest model
United Nations program, held in San Francisco in mid-April.
The class received kudos for its representation of Bosnia-Herzegovina-- the native country
of class member Senad Zlatar, said History and Political Science Department Head Bill Robison.
"Even though this is the first time that a group from Southeastern has participated in such a
program, our delegation was recognized with a certificate of achievement for the quality of their
performance," said Robison. "Out of 67 delegations, only 22, less than a third, received such
recognition. A number of participants told Dr. Corbello that our delegation was one of the best
ones there."
"Considering that Dr. Corbello and his students started from scratch this year in putting this
program together, this qualifies as a spectacular success," Robison said.
Class members are Cynthia Hunter, Senad Zlatar, and Roderick Thofield, Hammond; Emily
Ritchey and Wayne Aymond Jr., Ponchatoula; Rebecca Labat, LaPlace; Toby Danna, Denham
Springs; Oakley Jones, Baton Rouge; Tony Moran, Chalmette; and Jimmie Cason, Coco, Fla.
The Southeastern students participated in a variety of role playing activities to learn about
the United Nations and the issues the peace-keeping international body faces, Corbello said.
While some served as delegates on UN committees, Moran and Aymond represented
Bosnia-Herzegovina in the General Assembly.
As the result of their success in San Francisco, Corbello and his class have also formed an
International Political Simulations Club, and hope to stage a Model U.N. for high school students
at Southeastern next year. Members also plan to continue participating in Model U.N.
