SOUTHEASTERN PHI KAPPA PHI OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS
– Southeastern Louisiana University’s chapter of the national honor society
of Phi Kappa Phi has presented its Outstanding Alumnus award to 1986 Southeastern
graduate Danny Heitman, weekly columnist for “The Advocate,” Baton Rouge’s
daily newspaper. Heitman, right, a Ponchatoula native, received the award
at the chapter’s annual installation banquet on April 29 from chapter President
Barbara Allen, dean of the College of General Studies.

PHI KAPPA PHI TRAVEL GRANT RECIPIENT -- Melanie Charrier of Hammond, a
junior majoring in history, was one of 38 students nationwide to receive
a $1,000 national Phi Kappa Phi Study/Internship Abroad. Charrier, who
is a member of the university’s honors program, said she will use the grant
to help fund her participation this summer in the Southeastern Department
of Foreign Languages and Literatures’ Rome and Mediterranean Study Cruise.

SOUTHEASTERN STUDENTS INDUCTED
INTO NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
HAMMOND -- Southeastern
Louisiana University has inducted 85 students, faculty and alumni into
its chapter of the prestigious national honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.
To be considered for membership
in Phi Kappa Phi, a student must be in the top 10 percent of the senior
or graduate class or a second-semester junior in the top 7.5 percent of
his/her class. Sound character is a supporting criterion. Faculty and alumni
are chosen for outstanding contributions to their fields.
At the chapter's annual
induction banquet April 29, Southeastern Phi Kappa Phi honored Melanie
Charrier of Hammond, one of 38 students nationwide to receive a $1,000
national Phi Kappa Phi travel grant, and Don Paul Elbers of Mandeville,
the chapter’s nominee for a national Phi Kappa Phi graduate fellowship.
The chapter also recognized
as its Outstanding Phi Kappa Phi Alumnus Danny Heitman, editorial writer
and columnist for “The Advocate.” Heitman, who was the banquet keynote
speaker, is a 1986 Southeastern graduate.
Southeastern Phi Kappa
Phi recognized as Outstanding Juniors Elizabeth Renee Brown of Mandeville,
College of Arts and Sciences; Arron Pierre of Folsom, College of Business
and Technology; Anecia Denise Samons of Ponchatoula, College of Education
and Human Development; and Katie K. Hunt of Folsom, School of Nursing and
Health Sciences. The chapter’s Outstanding Freshman Award went to Haley
Echlin of Clinton, while Lauren Carson, an English major from Folsom, received
the Outstanding Honor Student award.
The 2004-2005 initiates
included Southeastern faculty members Kellen Gilbert, associate professor
of anthropology; Tena Golding, associate professor of mathematics; Linda
Munchausen, professor of chemistry; Stuart Stewart, assistant professor
of foreign languages; and David Wyle, professor of management.
Alumni inductees were Judith
Coxe, instructor of nursing, class of 1985; Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal
Judge James Kuhn, class of 1968; and William Brady, supervisor of administration
for St. Tammany Parish Schools, class of 1967.
