HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Small Business Development Center
will offer a seminar on payroll taxes for area small businesses from 8:30 to 11 a.m. January 28 at the
SLU University Center.
"Payroll taxes can be a nightmare for small business, particularly for new businesses who are
doing their own books or for those hiring employees for the first time," said SBDC Training
Coordinator Dedra Fourmaux. "Many small businesses don't realize the serious consequences of
classifying workers as independent contractors when they are actually considered employees by the
Internal Revenue Service."
The seminar costs $20, $10 for each additional person from the same company. Handouts and
refreshments will be provided. Seating is limited. To make a reservation, call Fourmaux at the SLU
SBDC, (504) 549-3831.
Seminar topics will include in-depth discussions of the difference between independent
contractor and employee status, payroll tax reporting responsibilities, payroll tax calculations, form
1099 reporting requirements, occupational licenses, and life and disability fringe benefits reporting.
The seminar presenter, Mary Valigosky, is a Certified Public Accountant and partner with
Pedelahore & Company in New Orleans. Valigosky has extensive experience in the areas of
management advisory services, financial reporting and income taxes and has presented many seminars
on accounting, tax and health care issues.
