NORTH OAK STREET TO REOPEN MAY 11 -- NEW TRAFFIC FLOW
HAMMOND -- With construction crews wrapping up the six-month project to widen
North Oak Street adjacent to Southeastern Louisiana University, campus and community drivers
will find a new traffic pattern in effect as of Friday, May 11.
At 4:30 p.m. that day, North Oak Street will reopen as a two-way north-south
thoroughfare with a center turning lane from Carter Street to University Ave. Northwest Railroad
Ave. becomes Carter Street for a short stretch as it jogs around the university tennis courts and
intersects with North Oak.
The new traffic flow will also turn North Oak to a one-way, south-bound street, beginning
at Carter Street. The one-way traffic flow will continue until North Oak merges with Southwest
Railroad Ave., south of West Coleman Street.
Northwest Railroad Ave. will become one-way, north-bound, from West Thomas Street
to Carter.
Southeastern Facility Planning Director Michael Rickenbaker said the North Oak
widening project, which began last May, "has gone far more smoothly than anyone could have
imagined. Everyone on campus and in the community was very cooperative. The end product
will be better moving traffic and we think it will be appreciated.
