HAMMOND -- Saxophonist Jonathan Noffsinger, a member of the faculty of the
University of Alabama School of Music, will present a guest recital Feb. 12 at Southeastern
Louisiana University.
Noffsinger's performance, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Pottle Music Building
Auditorium, is part of the Southeastern music department's spring "Encore!" music series.
Admission is free.
Noffsinger joined the University of Alabama music faculty in 1993 after holding
positions at Eastern Illinois University and Albion College. A native of Murray, Ky., Noffsinger
received his bachelor's degree in music education from Murray State University and his master
of music degree in saxophone performance from Louisiana State University.
He won a gold medal in saxophone performance as a student of Jean-Marie Londeix at
the National Conservatory in Bordeaux, France, and earned his doctoral degree in music at
Michigan State University where he studied with James Forger.
His awards and honors also include a performance by invitation at the 1998 Biennial
Conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance; first place at the Fischoff National
chamber Music Competition; semi-finalist in the Concert Artists Guild's New York Competition
as a chamber player and soloist, and winner of the LSU Concerto Competition. He also was the
selected performer at the 9th World Saxophone Congress in Tokyo, Japan, and was outstanding
soloist at the Memphis Jazz Festival.
Noffsinger has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Japan as a soloist and
clinician. He has also performed with professional productions of "42nd Street," "A Chorus
Line," "West Side Story," "Guys and Dolls," and with performing artists Crystal Gayle, Frankie
Avalon, Red Skelton, Bob Hope and the Temptations.
As a member of the saxophone quartet "MSUGSQ," he has recorded a compact disc with
Sunrise Studios of Japan which has been released under the ensemble's name.
