SLU NAACP CHAPTER HONORS WOMEN'S HISTORY
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's chapter of the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People will highlight the history of the university's African-
American students in a special program celebrating Women's History Month.
Hammond resident and retired educator Celene Short, a 1966 Southeastern graduate, will
be the guest speaker at the 7 p.m. program, scheduled for Tuesday, March 26 in the War
Memorial Student Union Theatre. The program also will feature a performance by the Lady
Cubs, a campus liturgical dance group, said NAACP member April Hawthorne.
Short is a retired guidance counselor with the Tangipahoa Parish School System where
she also served as a teacher and assistant principal. She was a member of Southeastern's 75th
Anniversary steering committee and Alumni Association board and was a panelist in the
university's 1998 "Town Hall" meeting. She currently works at Wal-Mart Distribution Center
and is active in the Tangipahoa Parish Mental Health Association and Macedonia Baptist
Church.
Hawthorne said the campus and community is invited "hear words of wisdom,
encouragement and knowledge and to learn how African-American students struggled to get us
here, where they are now and where we are, and where we are going." The program is free.
