SLU CELEBRATES MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY JAN. 22
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will close Jan. 20 in recognition of
the Martin Luther King national holiday, but will celebrate the late Civil Rights leader's birthday
on Jan. 22.
Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affair and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity,
Southeastern's Martin Luther King Day celebration will include guest lectures by State Senator
Wilson Fields of Baton Rouge, a wreath laying and a candlelight march.
All events are free and open to the public, said Milas Love, director of Multicultural
Affairs.
Fields, whose Senate District 15 includes parts of St. Helena and Tangipahoa Parishes,
will be the keynote speaker for a program beginning at 1 p.m. in the Pottle Music Building
Auditorium. He will be joined on the Pottle stage by retired veterinarian and civic leader Dr. J.L.
Garrett and the Rev. I.W.C. Dedrick of Pear Ridge Church of Christ in Hammond, who will talk
about their memories of Dr. King's life and times. Fields will speak on entitled "Living the
Dream."
The program will be followed by a wreath laying at the Martin Luther King tree in the
Student Union Park. At 6 p.m., the public is invited to join students in a candlelight procession
from Lee Hall residence hall to the Ralph R. Pottle Music Building, where a film on Dr. King's
life, "Amazing Grace: Martin Luther King," will be shown.
