BROADCASTING SOCIETY TO HONOR LOCAL NEWSMAN
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Broadcasting Society is honoring
Baton Rouge news anchorman John Mahaffey with its first Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mahaffey, who will retire in May after more than 20 years with Baton Rouge television
station WBRZ Channel 2, will receive the award and discuss his career in broadcast journalism
on April 29. The public is invited to the 7 p.m. event in the SLU University Center, room 133.
Mahaffey anchors WBRZ's noon and 5 p.m. news broadcasts and hosts a segment on
medical advancements called "John Mahaffey's Health Capsule." He also is a spokesperson for
Crime Stoppers and writes and co-produces those segments of the broadcast.
"I chose this work because it wasn't dull," said Mahaffey, who began his career as a
studio cameraman in Texarkana, Texas. He also worked as a technical director, film director and
marketing manager before manning the news anchor desk. He is a graduate of the University of
Texas.
For additional information about the event, contact Mike Applin in Southeastern's
communication and theatre department, 504-549-5681.
