SLU LITERACY CONFERENCE TO SPOTLIGHT THE ARTS
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University Literacy Conference will give
area teachers creative ways to integrate the arts into subjects such as science, social studies and
mathematics.
The conference, "Pulling the Pieces Together Creatively--Integrating the Arts into the
Curriculum," is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon, April 18, in the Cate Teacher Education Center's
second floor meeting room, the Kiva.
The conference's fee is $10 for early registration by April 3 and $15 for late registration.
Southeastern faculty and students pay a $5 fee.
Kimberlye Hunicke, executive director of the new Getty Education Institute, an affiliate
of the Louisiana Institute for Education in the Arts, will deliver the keynote address at 9 a.m.
Hunicke is one of the original directors of the Louisiana Institute for Education in the Arts, a tri-
parish consortium charged with creating a discipline-based arts education institute in Louisiana.
Hunicke will talk about the power of arts education in teaching and learning and show
how it can act as a catalyst for serious and meaningful learning.
Creative teachers who are using the arts in their instruction also will share their successes
with teachers and administrators in special sessions at 10:15 a.m. and 11 a.m.
For additional information about the Southeastern Literacy Conference, call Jeanne
Burns, SLU Teacher Education Department, 504-549-5083.
