LIONETTES ADD TO HOMECOMING CHEER
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University’s dance team, the Lionettes, will bring Southeastern spirit to the community this week during Homecoming, with various performances and a spirit competition for junior high and high school students.
“The Lionettes have had a highly successful year, and we feel its due in part to the wide range of support from both Southeastern and the surrounding area,” said Melissa Bordelon, Lionette advisor. “Homecoming gives us a great opportunity to give something back to the community and show everyone what we are made of.”
On Thursday, November 7, the Lionettes will perform during Pride Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in War Memorial Student Union. At 5:30 p.m., they will dance through campus, joining their fellow students for their annual parade to the University Center, the site of the Homecoming bonfire and pep rally. On Friday, November 8, they will travel to Oak Knoll Country Club to add to the spirit and entertainment at the Homecoming golf tournament.
On Saturday, November 9, for the first time in its nine year run, the Dixie RV/Southeastern Spirit Competition will be held at Strawberry Stadium. Co-sponsored by Peronne Shoe Service, J & J Trophies, and Southeastern’s Student Government Association, the popular competition for area junior high and high school dance teams and cheerleaders will begin at 12:30 p.m.
“As a sponsor, the Lionettes approached Dixie RV to make this change of venue so that prospective students from both high and junior high schools can come to the campus and see all Southeastern has to offer them,” said Bordelon. “What better day to see the true Southeastern spirit than Homecoming!”
Lionette alumni and parents will selling Papa Johns pizza and refreshments at the competition to help fund the Lionettes’ January trip to the United Dance Association’s College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship in Orlando, Fla.
Last year, in only their second year of national competition, the Lionettes placed eighth in Division I of the 2002 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship in Orlando. This year, they will go into the competition with a number four ranking. Rankings are based on performance videos.
The Lionettes will close out Homecoming with a performance in the University Center as the Lions basketball team takes on the Spirit Express at 2 p.m..
Bordelon said the Lionettes are excited about adding performances at football games to their schedule in 2003. Students interested in becoming a Lionettes can contact Bordelon at 985-549-5678 or lionettes@selu.edu
