CUTLINE ...
HOW PLANTS SURVIVE -- Paul Keddy, the Edward G. Schlieder Chair in Environmental
Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University, will conduct a five-year National Science
Foundation-funded study of plant competition in a pond on the Hammond, La. campus. Keddy
and his research assistants will transform the pond into a miniature wetlands to understand
plants' battles for survival and determine how that understanding can impact wetlands restoration
efforts. He is standing next to a saw grass plant, one of the dozen marshland species that will be
used in the experiment.
