|SOUTHEASTERN JAZZ ENSEMBLE CONCERT FEATURES FAVORITES
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana
University’s acclaimed Jazz Ensemble will present a concert of jazz standards
on Wednesday, November 20, at the university’s Columbia Theatre for the
Performing Arts in downtown Hammond.
The free concert is scheduled
for 7:30 p.m., said Department of Music and Dramatic Arts professor Allen
Zurcher, who directs the ensemble.
“We’re going to perform works
from standard jazz literature,” said Zurcher. “These are tunes that were
popular before the advent of rock and roll, such as ‘All of Me,’ as arranged
by Billy Byers and played by Count Basie and his orchestra. Many of these
pieces originally were Broadway show tunes.”
Zurcher added that the concert
will also include “a couple of surprises.”
The 16-member ensemble’s program
includes favorites such as “Love For Sale” by Cole Porter, “Bright Eyes”
by Paul Clark, “The Mighty Dollar” by David Array, “Sho’ Nuff!” by Dizzy
Gilespie and “April in Paris” by Vernon Duke.
