SOUTHEASTERN HOSTS THREE EVENINGS OF JAZZ
HAMMOND – Those who love
jazz can enjoy three concerts next week at Southeastern Louisiana University’s
Pottle Music Building Auditorium.
Richard Schwartz, director
of jazz studies and instructor of saxophone, will conduct the university’s
Jazz Combos, the Two O’Clock Big Band and the One O’Clock Big Band on May
2, 3 and 6, respectively.
Schwartz said the 8 p.m.
May 2 concert by the Southeastern Jazz Combos will feature compositions
by jazz artists such as Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter,
John Lewis, and Southeastern's own legend, the late jazz pianist Bill Evans.
The Southeastern Two O'Clock
Big Band will take the Pottle stage at 8 p.m. on May 3 to perform a variety
of jazz compositions from Harry Warren's classic "Chattanooga Choo Choo"
and Oliver Nelson's hit "Groove" to Thomas Anderson's modern and bluesy
"Bionic Turkey."
The May 6 concert by the
Southeastern One O'Clock Big Band will pay homage to the late great jazz
legend Duke Ellington. Schwartz said the 7:30 p.m. program will include
six of Ellington's compositions including his masterpiece, "Diminuendo
and Crescendo in Blue."
