SOUTHEASTERN PROFESSOR RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF WORLD'S
MOST PUBLISHED ECONOMISTS
HAMMOND Southeastern Louisiana University economics professor Yu Hsing has
been ranked as the 13th most published economist in the world.
Head of the department of general business in Southeastern's College of Business and
Technology, Hsing is the only Louisiana economist to be ranked in the top 50 based on the
number of his publications listed in EconLit, a database of abstracts of articles published in
economics journals worldwide.
Hsing published 27 articles between 1994 and 1998 in prestigious journals such "Social
Sciences and Medicine" (Harvard University), "Resource and Energy Economics" (University of
Chicago), "Industrial Relations" (University of California-Berkeley), "Journal of Urban
Economics" (Northwestern University-Evanston, IL), and "Applied Economics" (University of
London).
"I can't emphasize how prestigious a recognition this is," said Michael Budden, dean of
the College of Business and Technology. "I always tell people we have one of the top
economists on our faculty, now I have the objective criteria to back up my statement. Indeed, no
other economist in Louisiana equaled the number of articles Dr. Hsing wrote in journals cited in
EconLit."
"When I received the news of this honor, I was surprised," said Hsing. Hsing said he
began searching the EconLit for his name from the bottom-up. When the search took him all the
way to number 13, "I became very shocked," he said. "Research compliments teaching. The

university provides strong support and a wonderful environment for research. I am very humbled
and know I am very lucky to be at Southeastern."
Hsing, who joined Southeastern in 1987, received the university's prestigious President's
Award for Excellence in research, one of a trio of top faculty honors, in 1990. He earned his
bachelor's degree from the College of Chinese Culture in Taiwan in 1971, master's degree from
the University of Oregon in 1975 and a second master's degree and doctoral degree from the
University of Tennessee by 1983.
"Thirteen is a lucky number for both Dr. Hsing and Southeastern," said President Sally
Clausen. "Being ranked number 13 in the world, and the only Louisiana economist in the top 50
is quite an accomplishment. We are indeed fortunate to have Dr. Hsing as a member of the
Southeastern family."
