SOUTHEASTERN BREAKS GROUND FOR "GREEK VILLAGE"
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University broke ground on Friday, June 16 for
"Greek Village," a unique new $7 million residential housing facility for the university's
fraternities and sororities.
The shovel-wielding ceremony took place at 9:30 a.m. at the new facility's four-acre site,
located on Southeastern's North Campus, behind the University Center and Southeastern Oaks,
the $7 million, 312- bed student apartment complex which opened last year.
Southeastern Oak's contractor, Capstone Development of Birmingham, Ala., will also
build Greek Village, which 11 Southeastern sororities and fraternities plan to occupy in early
2001. Greek Village also shares Southeastern Oaks' unique financing arrangement. It will be
financed by University Facilities, Inc., a non-profit corporation that acquires, constructs and
renovates facilities for the university. UFI will lease Greek Village to Southeastern, which will
manage and operate it. The university, in turn, will lease to individual student residents.
Nick Bruno, assistant vice president for special initiatives and director of auxiliary
services, said Greek Village is unique in providing sororities and fraternities the opportunity to
live together in their own neighborhood, without the expense of buying or building their own
house.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, President Sally Clausen praised the university's
fraternities and sororities for their know-how, drive and enthusiasm. "This is a historic moment,
not just for the Greek community, but for all our students at Southeastern who will benefit from
the leadership embodied in your respective organizations," Clausen told the large group of
fraternity and sorority members who participated in the event.

GREEK VILLAGE Add One
Arranged as a triangle around an open courtyard, Greek Village will have 22-bed, 15-bed
and 11-bed units, each with its own large meeting room and kitchen facilities. Each two-bed
room has its own full bath.
The complex also will have a coffee shop, convenience store and laundry and a three-
story 91-bed unit that will be open to non-Greek students if sorority and fraternity members do
not claim all the rooms.
Greek organizations planning to occupy Greek Village include sororities Alpha Omicron
Pi, Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Mu, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Theta Phi Alpha,
and fraternities Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Tau Gamma, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and
Theta Chi.
Bruno said lease rates are $1,000 per student, per semester for Greek organization
members and $1,200 for independent students.
"Southeastern has discussed Greek housing for many years," said Kim Hunter Reed,
interim vice president for student affairs and executive assistant to President Sally Clausen.
"Both the administration and students are very happy with the Greek Village concept. It provides
an attractive, cost-efficient community for our sororities and fraternities, who all contribute so
much to campus life at Southeastern. We expect great things from this village."
