SOUTHEASTERN GREEKS CELEBRATE UNITY GREEK WEEK 2002
HAMMOND Members of Southeastern Louisiana University's 18 fraternities and
sororities are planning a marathon of community service during their celebration of Greek Week,
March 18-20.
With the theme "The Few, the Proud, the Greek," the week will kickoff with a
celebration, including music, a banner competition, and special giveaways for Greek faculty and
staff members, at the War Memorial Student Union Mall at noon on Monday, March 18.
"Also on Monday, as well as the remainder of the week, we will be fund-raising for
Options and Rape Crisis," said Phi Mu sorority member Megan Vesely of Kenner, who is co-
chairing Greek Week with Tau Kappa Epsilon's Ross Gares of Violet.
"These two causes are very close to our hearts and we want to make a contribution in the
name of the Southeastern Greek Community," Vesely said. "We are hoping that our efforts will
produce substantial contributions for both agencies."
On "Greeks Make a Difference Day," Tuesday, March 19, "Our goal is to perform 1,000
hours of community service for the people of Hammond in about 10 hours," said Gares. "If we
all pull together it equals out to about two hours per member of our Greek community. It's a
challenge but we're committed to accomplishing this goal."
Gares said agencies that will benefit from Greeks Make a Difference Day include
Southeastern and Hammond Head Start programs, Strawberry Patch, Belle Maison Nursing
Home, Hammond Nursing Home, Options, Hammond and Ponchatoula branches of the
Tangipahoa Parish Library, Tangi Food Pantry, Hammond Developmental Center, Hammond
Boys and Girls Club, and Eastside Elementary
Greek Week events also include a toga party, chariot parade, Greek Olympics, and the
"Final Bash" awards ceremony and reception. A 7 p.m. lip sync competition at the Student Union
Theater on Monday, March 18 is open to the public.
