SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA UNIVERSITY TO GRADUATE 870
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University conferred degrees on approximately
870 graduates Saturday, May 12, at the university's 76th commencement exercises.
U.S. Rep. David Vitter (R-La.) was the keynote speaker at the 10 a.m. ceremony at the
University Center.
President's Medals for Academic Excellence were awarded to the top students in each
college: elementary education major Kerri Michele Spell of Covington, College of Education
and Human Development, 3.979 grade point average; physics major Jason M. Calmes of
Jefferson, College of Arts and Sciences, 4.0 grade point average; history major Jacob Donald
Rice of Covington, College of Arts and Sciences, 4.0 grade point average; Spanish major Javier
Humberto Venturi of Baton Rouge, College of Arts and Sciences, 4.0 grade point average;
psychology major Jeffrey Joseph Starns of Loranger, College of Arts and Sciences, 4.0 grade
point average; marketing major Kathrine Nadine Hutchinson of Springfield, College of Business
and Technology, 4.0 grade point average; management major Kathryn E. Holliday of
Ponchatoula, College of Business and Technology, 4.0 grade point average; speech, language
and hearing major Kristin C. Cole of Belle Chasse, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, 4.0
grade point average.
The university also recognized the 2001 recipients of the President's Awards for
Excellence, the university's highest faculty honor: Samuel C. Hyde Jr., associate professor of
history and director of the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies, for research; Richard Louth,
professor of English and director of Freshman English and the Southeastern Louisiana Writing
Project, for teaching; Charles A. Dranguet Jr., professor of history and political science and
coordinator of the International Studies Program, for service; and Robert "Doc" Goodwin,
athletic trainer, for staff service.
