SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA UNIVERSITY TO GRADUATE 800
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University conferred degrees on approximately
800 graduates Saturday, May 15, at the university's 74th commencement exercises.
John Kenelly, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Clemson University
and 1994 Southeastern Alumnus of the Year, was the keynote speaker at the 10 a.m. ceremony at
the University Center. The university also awarded an honorary degree to Charles B. Redman,
senior vice-president of Hibernia National Bank and chairman of the Southeastern Development
Foundation, and presented its Golden Ambassador Award to Hammond banker Phil Livingston,
chairman of the "Commitment to Excellence" capital campaign.
President Sally Clausen announced the 1999 recipients of the university's prestigious
President's Awards for Excellence. Recipients are Brian I. Crother, associate professor of
biological sciences, Excellence in Research; Bradley S. O'Hara, associate professor of marketing,
Excellence in Teaching; Dana Brewer-Plazinic, instructor in kinesiology, Excellence in Artistic
Activity; Mary Sue Ply, associate professor of English, Excellence in Service-Faculty; and Jim
McHodgkins, assistant dean of student development, Excellence in Service-Unclassified Staff.
President's Medals for Academic Excellence were awarded to the top students in each
college: School of Nursing, Angela R. Caprera, Hammond, 3.861 grade point average; College of
Business, Michelle Rene Cothern, Bogalusa, 4.0 gpa, and Stephanie Lynn Wascom, Hammond,
4.0 gpa; College of Education, Jennifer Lueth, LaPlace, 4.0 gpa, and College of Arts and
Sciences, Heidi Maria Ransom of Hammond, 4.0 gpa.
