SLU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION TO HONOR DECEASED
     HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association will host the
first Golden Silence Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Thursday Sept. 26 in the Student Union Park.  
     Golden Silence is a new program designed to honor deceased Southeastern alumni,
students, faculty and staff through a moment of silence every semester.
     "People are the vital link for our university, whether they are students, alumni, facutly,
staff, even friends and supporters," said alumni director Kathy Pittman. "Even when a person is
gone, their spirit lives on; so often, it lives on here at Southeastern. Honoring Southeastern's
deceased is the first step in instilling a sense of pride and tradition among those with the common
bond of a love of SLU." 
     The brief Golden Silence ceremony will feature a performance of the university's Alma
Mater. President Sally Clausen will light a large candle and, as the names of those who passed
away that semester are read, students and families will light their own candles from the large one. 
     "The most crucial part of this program is obtaining the names of those Southeastern
family members to be honored," said Pittman. "We encourage the public to keep Southeastern
informed. Please let us know if someone from the Southeastern family has passed away so that
they and their families can be honored at the Golden Silence." 
      The service is open to the public and will honor those who have died since January 1995.
